Over the past few years, I have started a small collection of houseplants to keep me company in my apartment. I have found it interesting, as time has passed, to watch them respond and adapt to the particular characteristics of what might be considered a less than ideal environment. The most interesting response I have observed is phototropism, which is when a plant bends in the direction of, or away from, a source of light. One of my vining plants, particularly, has developed a dramatic reaching-like pose towards the window - one that I cannot seem to help but personify as a gesture of longing. This sculpture is a direct response to these observations.
