And Where Do We Go from Here?
2020 - 2023
This body of work is largely informed by a sense of uncertainty I hold regarding the future, both directed towards my personal life and the world more broadly. Through working with a wide range of materials and processes, including iron and handmade paper, I create sculptures that consider these concerns and feelings. I intertwine human made structures with forms found within the natural world to fabricate highly entropic landscapes and objects that are teetering somewhere between growth and ruin. These scenes are not to be taken as literal visions of what the future may hold, but as fear-ridden contemplations of what may lie ahead. I do, however, make attempts to interject moments of optimism. One can sometimes find the inclusion of imagery that suggests new life, particularly that of plants. But, within this world I have been creating, these instances are sparsely placed amongst a larger sea of rubble and piles of junk.
Through the creation of this work, I aim to make peace with the temporary nature of most things, and embrace the idea that some things, both good and bad, will inevitably change. I seek to reframe destruction not just as an end of something, but as a way of making room for a new beginning.
